Do Clothes Moths Bite Human Beings?
Most people will never have to deal with clothes moths. On the other hand, you may have experienced the destruction they are capable of causing. If you’re one of these people, then you probably hate moths. You may even see them as being dangerous, or even malevolent. But is this really true? Are clothes moths dangerous and do clothes moths bite you?
Do you need to worry if you have moths?
The good news is that clothes moths are not known for being dangerous. These pests do not spread germs, bacteria or disease. Neither will clothes moths bite you. That means you do not need to worry about these pests harming you. That being said, you should worry about the damage they could cause to your home.
When you see the damage these pests cause, well, you may as well have suffered a clothes moth’s bite! The best way to avoid this damage is by keeping a close watch on your cupboards and clothing and maintain a pest free home. These should be regularly inspected. It’s also a good idea to routinely wash your clothing. This helps to destroy any eggs which are laid by moths. After washing, pack clothes away into plastic bags, or containers. Do not simply forget about these. It’s a good idea to check these every six months, or at least once a year.
Can you prevent clothes moths at home?
The best time to do this is at the start of summer, when the eggs hatch and caterpillars come out. In addition to this, it’s a good idea to place deterrents against clothes moths. First of all, place a few moth balls into your clothing bags. These may seem old-fashioned, but they are still highly effective. Something else which is even more effective are pheromone traps.
These traps consist of a small container which has a sticky board inside it. The box also has pheromones which attract the male moth. Once the moth enters into the trap it becomes stuck, and then dies. This means the female moths can no longer reproduce and the species collapses, protecting your stored clothes.
Bottom line: a clothes moth’s bite is something that you’ll never have to worry about. What you should worry about is the destruction these pests can cause. This is why it’s so important that you take precautions against clothes moths. Make sure to wash clothing, pack it away properly, and also place deterrents and always call in a local pest exterminator. As long as you do this, these pests should never be a problem.
