Both methods can be highly effective when carried out by trained professionals. They are not interchangeable, however. Heat uses controlled high temperatures to kill pests in place. Fumigation uses a pesticide gas or vapour to reach pests in enclosed spaces. The word “fumigation” is sometimes used loosely to describe any pest treatment involving smoke, fog or insecticide. True fumigation is more specialised. It requires detailed planning, strict exclusion procedures, sealing where appropriate, controlled exposure periods and clearance checks before people or pets can return. It is not a treatment to attempt without professional expertise.

When Heat Treatment Is the Better Option

Heat is particularly well suited to bed bug control. Heat treatment can have a higher upfront cost because of the specialist equipment, energy use and skilled monitoring involved. However, for a contained bed bug infestation, the ability to treat eggs and active insects in one properly managed visit can make it better value than several incomplete treatments.

Fumigation costs vary widely because each job requires a site-specific assessment. The size of the sealed area, pest species, access, preparation, required exclusion period and post-treatment clearance all affect the price. It is rarely a like-for-like comparison with a standard insecticide visit.

Be cautious of any quote given without questions about the pest, property layout, level of activity and preparation requirements. Effective pest control starts with diagnosis. Treating the wrong pest, or using the wrong method, wastes time and can allow the infestation to spread.

Choosing the Right Treatment for Your Property

For bed bugs in a home, flat, hotel room or rental property, heat treatment is often the preferred solution because it is fast, residue-free and effective against eggs when delivered correctly. For pests affecting stored goods, difficult voids or specialist commercial environments, fumigation may be the appropriate option. It should only follow a detailed professional assessment that considers the pest species, access, safety controls and the operational impact on the site.

In some cases, neither heat nor fumigation is the first answer. Cockroaches, fleas, moths, ants and stored-product insects can require tailored insecticide treatments, sanitation improvements, proofing work or ongoing monitoring. Rodent activity needs a different plan again, combining safe removal with proofing to stop reinfestation.
